Mrs Benson is the person responsible for Inclusion at our school

At The Cathedral Catholic Primary School, we are committed to inclusion and equal opportunities. We work closely with parents and other agencies in order to ensure that all pupils are able to successfully access the curriculum.

Our school population includes a wide range of different community groups and we are dedicated to ensuring that our school is a place where everyone feels welcome and where all pupils can learn. Our consistently high expectations and inclusive teaching practices ensure that The Cathedral School is a place where children can achieve their best.

Our pupils have a range of different abilities and interests, beliefs and aspirations. Many of our pupils also speak other languages and are learning to speak English. At The Cathedral School, we want all of our pupils to succeed and thoroughly enjoy their education. The staff at The Cathedral School are experienced in teaching pupils with a wide range of abilities and are trained to use a variety of different techniques and intervention programmes to ensure all children can access the curriculum fully.

Pastoral Care

Mrs Blamire and Mrs Speak are the Learning Mentors. They currently work with children in a pastoral remit, within a nurturing environment throughout the school. Help, support and guidance for parents and carers are offered in connection with local outside agencies.

The central aim is to provide a calm, safe and secure environment, so children can develop physically, socially, emotionally, verbally and cognitively... and feel that sense of belonging to our school family.

A sense of belonging develops:

   - feelings of safety (physical safety, safety to be oneself and to make mistakes)

   - feelings of trust (trust in relationships)

   - being valued (being wanted)

Mrs. Blamire and Mrs Speak are both Mental Health Champions for our school. They support our school family and help promote good mental health and wellbeing, which in turn helps our children to progress both with their class work and their relationships with their peers and wider friendship groups.

The Equality Act 2010 replaced nine major pieces of legislation to make it easier understand each school’s legal responsibility to tackle inequalities in education.

“In the most effective schools, the headteacher and governors establish a clear vision, rooted in an unwavering commitment to ensure the success of every pupil. Equality of opportunity is at the heart of this vision, with an insistence that all pupils will do well.”

Sir Michael Wilshaw

Avoiding discrimination and promoting equality supports the agenda of improving the attainment and progress of all pupils, regardless of their circumstances and backgrounds.

The Ofsted Inspection Framework makes clear that tackling inequalities and disadvantages should be reflected in every aspect of school life, and will be considered as part of all inspection judgments.

Creating learning without Limits

The Cathedral Catholic Primary  Equality Objectives:

  • To promote spiritual, moral, social and cultural development through all appropriate curricular and extra-curricular opportunities.  We aim to meet this objective with particular reference to issues of equality and diversity.
  • To reduce prejudice and increase understanding of equality through direct teaching and incidental opportunities across the curriculum.
  • To move beyond deterministic notions of fixed ability and to model learning and teaching that avoids labelling.
  • To promote cultural development and understanding through a rich range of experience, both in and beyond the school.
  • To eradicate prejudice related bullying of any kind in relation to the protected characteristics list in the Equality Act 2010.
  • To tackle prejudice and promote understanding in relation to people with disabilities.

We always welcome the involvement of parents and carers in decision making and we want to work closely with them so that our pupils can always give nothing but the best!
